Learning Reflection





This is the last blog for A Discourse Approach in Reading. After I finished this course I know the techniques of reading. This course is very helpful to me. It is used for learning and practical results. It makes me read, understand and summarize our words. I am going to tell you about "Learning reflection"

What was I learning about A Discourse Approach in Reading course?

I studied many lessons for this course.

* Recount That is about the unfolding of a sequence of events. It has three types:  Personal Recount, Factual Recount, and Imaginative

* Recount - It tells the series, events, or stories that happened.

* NarrativeIt was the reader talk about interest and it made me know, how to understand the stories by noticing each paragraph.

* DescriptiveThat is to describe a particular it can be a person, place, or thing. It helps me understand in text.

* ProcedureThat is to tell the reader how to do or make something. It made  me know how to present or tell the information in events. So, for this lesson, the teacher assigned me to make the video for presentation how to cook food also in my group cook a strawberry and mango yogurt.

* Comparison and Contrast That is the pattern presents similarities (comparison) between two or more things, differences (contrast) between two or more things, or both similarities and differences. It made me know how to compare and contrast.

* Cause and Effect That is used to show how the facts, events or concepts. It made me know what the causes are, and what the effects in the text are by finding the discourse marker of cause and effect.

* Definition and ClassificationThat Classification is to divide general concepts into a number of different types, and Definition helps us to know the meaning of technical terms.

* ExemplificationThat is adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea.

* Problem and SolutionThat is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution).

What did I find the easy things?

For this course, had something easy for me is Examples of each article. Before each lesson which when I see example text I can guess what we will learn. What is the subject matter of the course?


What did I find the difficult things?

I found some difficult reading and speaking. Because some words that I couldn’t pronounce it correctly and some of them I didn’t know the meaning and I searched the meaning on my smartphone at once.


How did I solve these problems?

For this course. I find the problem that matter of how to reading the words and I do not know the meaning of the vocabulary. Which I have a solution to fix is. After each lesson is finished. I summarize the content of each story by using your own words for be easy to understand. Interpretation of unknown words. And use the Cambridge Dictionary to listen to how to pronounce because it can pronounce correctly.


What is my attitude toward this course?

For the attitude to study this cause, it makes me want to read more. Because I can understand more about reading, which I use to read the lessons learned. It made me understand. l thanks so much the teacher who teaches me to had more knowledge.

Problem and Solution (week 13)

Problem and Solution


On Monday 24th April, we studied chapter 9: Problem and Solution. First of all, the teacher checked our names. Next, the teacher gave us the handout about the problem and solution. After that, she told us to read the Problem and Solution in the first page. And then, she explained us to know about the purpose of problem and solution.

Next, the teacher told us to read the example in the handout. And then, she taught us how to understand the passages where is a problem and a solution.

After she told the Problem Markers and highlight the Solution Markers then write either Problem or Solution.


Next she assignment skill practice and opened the Cambridge Dictionary Online found some word.



After we did it finished, the teacher told us to do the exercise 1 that was read the passages and wrote the title. 



Today, I think exercise 1 was difficult because it had a lot of world that I don’t know.

But I think the skill practice activity was easy for me because I could do it correctly. 

I used the Discourse Markers of the Problem and Solution for comprehension the texts and doing the activities in the handout.

I summery about definition and classification for I understand it.

Exemplification (week 12)

Exemplification




On Monday 10th April, we learned about Chapter 8: Exemplification., the teacher read and explained the text, this text is about adding bore information to explain, persuade, or illustrate a general idea.

Then, she told us to read about exemplification finished, she explained us about commonly used abbreviations and transitions in exemplification text.



After that, the teacher told us to do Text 1-4 . 

After I did a text I think that commonly used abbreviation and transitions in exemplification text difficult for me. Because of it has a lot. But, some world I don’t know of meaning.

But I think, the text 2 was easy for me because I could get the text easily and I could do it correctly.

I used the discourse markers of exemplification to do the activities in the handout.

Definition and Classification


    


On Monday 3rd April, I studied definition and classification., the teacher explained about definition and classification. Then, she told us to read definition and classification, it had many examples. 


And then, she taught us about the discourse markers of definition and classification. So, it will help us to find the meaning of the unknown word in the text.Then, the teacher explained The language of definition and classification in the handout.




After that, she explained us about strategiesdefinition and classification. Then, she told us to do the skill practice 1 and skill practice 2 in the handout


And then, we did it finished, the teacher assigned the text.


I think that text 1 was difficult for me. Because of it have a lot of unknown words.

In the other hand, I think skill practice 2 was easy for me because of I can do it. 

I used discourse markers of this lesson for finding the answers.

Cause and Effect (week 10)

Cause and Effect



On Monday 20th March, we studied Cause and Effect. Then she explained about cause and effect. Next, the teacher assigned us to do practiceand skill practice 1in the handout.

    
Next, she began to explain us about cause and effect. And then, she read text exampleand practicefor us. After that, she explained discourse markers of cause and effect”.


    
And then, the teacher told us to do skill practice 2in the handout. After we did it finished, she gave us the corrective feedback of skill practice 2. 



Next, the teacher told us to read The effect of stressand answer questions below the text.



I think that the effect of stress activity was difficult for me because of I found many difficult words.


I think that skill practice 1 was easy. Because of I just find the word.

I used discourse marker of cause and effect for finding the answers .

Comparison and Contrast continues



On Monday 13th March, we studied Comparison and Contrastcontinued, the teacher was the text 2 in the handout. So, I check with answers were not different.


After that, we set the chairs for preparing about the mid-term test.

I think the mid-term test of this course was not difficult for me because of I can do it.

    In addition, I used finding the discourse marker for reading the text. So, it made me comprehend the text easily.

I summery about comparison and contrast for I understand it.



Homework:

    A: Do you agree with Tannens views on the subject? Be specific about your points of disagreement.
  •   Yes, I agree with Tannens view.

    
    B: Are any of Tannens points about the different personalities of men and women true in your native culture? Explain. Do men and women in your native culture use the language the way Tannen claims American men and women do? Give specific examples.
  •     Yes, men make fun of women for talking too much.

"Procedure continues" and Comparison and Contrast"


On Monday 6th March, I studied Procedureand Comparison and Contrast, the teacher told us to talk with friends about what did I do on weekend?After that, she read the text 3 in the handout and then she read it finished, she opened words that helped us for pronouncing them accurately such as:

  •   ensure (v.) /ɪnˈʃɔːr/ = to make something certain to happen.
  •   disposal (n.)  /dɪˈspəʊ.zəl/ = the act of getting rid of something,        especially by throwing it away.


Next, she told us to open the first page of this handout. So, it was about the purpose, types of procedural texts, - The purpose of the procedure is to tell the reader how to do or make somethingTypes of procedural texts are explain how something works or how to use instruction/operation manuals, and that instruct how to do a particular activity.

Next, the teacher showed us the new reason that was Comparison and Contrast”. Then, she told   On the other hand, 

  • Contrast is to compare the two things or more over that are differences.
  • Comparison is to compare the two things or more over that are similarities.

Next, the teacher read and explained it. Then she gave us the new handout that was about Comparison and Contrast”. After that, she told us to read the text 1 in the handout. After we read it finished, she told us to do the activity in this




I think that compare the things that are difficult for me because of I couldn’t choose the best word for comparison. It had many word to use.

On the other hand, I think exercises 1-5 in the procedure are easy for me.

I used discourse marker for comprehension the many texts that I read in the handout.
